Claritin is probably the best OTC med out there because it has fewer side effects than many of the others. You do have to take it regularly; it's not an instant fix. And you should start taking it right when allergy season is about to start because it takes a few days to weeks to get the effective level in your body.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the most effective antihistamine. If you come into an emergency room with a life-threatening allergic response, you will get intravenous benadryl in addition to steroids and epinephrine.

So for pollen allergies, Benadryl works best. However, it also makes you very tired. Many over-the-counter sleep aids, like Tylenol PM, use diphenhydramine/Benadryl to put you to sleep.

Claritin doesn't make you tired, so if you need to be awake, that may be a better choice. For me, though, Claritin doesn't work at all.

Good luck.
