hi,
i was afraid too, when i needed mental help in my life. you can think it to be scary and make yourself a nervous wreck or sick over it. its just a fear of going into the unknown, into something you have never done before. it is wonderful that you have the support you have, so use it all. many many people have no one that will support them, you are indeed blessed. don't be afraid to talk to these care givers, if you don't talk to them, they won't know how best to help you and that is what you need, their help. so cooperate all you can. it will be okay..i promise!!! God Bless!

Do it the easy way; putting it all down on paper, or making a tape, and taking the recorder along, then you can read it or play it when you get there, and you will have already started down the path to wellness, by having made a committment to your future mental health, through that act. You should say that you "have great difficulty talking about these things, but once you (the therapist you are talking to) understand the issues involved, you can ask questions, and I will try to answer them, only not too much in the first session, OK, because it has already built up to a big thing in my mind, just coming here", or words to that effect. Bring along those people you feel most comfortable with, the first time; once you know what it is like, it will be much easier next time.

Doing new things is always scary!

I can't tell you why you are afraid but i can tell you you shouldn't be afraid. People in the Mental Health business are for the most part very kind people who will NOT force you to say or do something you don't want to say or do. They'll ask you questions but it's up to you if you answer.

And unless they are afraid you might hurt yourself or someone else they WILL not and CAN not tell anyone else anything you say to them.

When you do go tell them you are afraid (if you still are) and they can help you relax. Mental health clinics, especially the rooms of psychologists and counselors are also very peaceful, nice temperatures, nice non offending wall colors and decorations.

And just remember if you are not comfortable for any reason with the person you are seeing you can tell them that- they won't get offended- or ask your family/friends/spouse/ primary doctor to refer you to someone else.

To ease some of your anxiety you can write down what questions YOU have for the doctors/therapists, and what you might want to talk to them about. This will help you make the most out of your time there.

Just Relax and get some sleep.

I was afraid too the first time I went to see a mental professional after being reffered. And I even had my mom there with my the whole time. But you shouldn't be afraid. They are only there to help you, not make you feel worse in any way. Which is why you should relax. It'll be fine once you get in there.
Wishing you the best of luck!

You're confused. You feel like you're going to go in there, and the person is going to analyze you down to your bones, maybe find something there that you don't want known. But you shouldn't be affraid. They're there to help and make things better. No one wants to feel miserable all the time. I think you'll be just fine.

Cause you don't know what is going to happen. Everyone is afraid of the unknown.
Go to this web site and get a better understanding of what is going on in your head. It really is no big deal.

You are afraid of what they are going to say or do. Just remember that you are human and they are their to help. Talk to them and express your feelings they are going to keep it private.-L

You don't need to be worried. I've been talking to someone for a few years now, and they don't judge you or do anything weird. It's not as bad as everybody says it will be..

it is completely normal for you to feel this way. it is funny how we as human beings have little or no anxiety about seeing a doctor for, let's say, a stomach ache, but when it comes to that 3 pound universe in our skull, we get all shook-up. please try and relax. god bless you.
