I have been having chronic pain in my back, hip and knees. I'm taking Ibprofen 800mg 3 times a day, but its not always helpful, I asked my doctor for something stronger and she said no, so I don't know what do do, I can't hardly sleep at night.

I haven't been diagnosed but my doctor said I was at risk for otheioarthritis(sp) I will take the suggestion to see a chiropractor tho I'm not sure that will help with my knees, this is gross but it feels like shards of glass in there everytime I move it, the cartolage(sp) has broken up/worn away due to my knee caps not being where there suppose to be.

Honestly, see a good orthopedic doctor. Indeed, what you are suffering from is disintegrating cartilidge in th eknee (behind the kneecaps) and you are headed for BIG trouble. Believe me, see an orthopedic doctor now for a complete evaluation, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests. Structural malalignment of the kneecaps is trouble now and later. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, try and treat this yourself. You need a qualified orthopedic doctor to evaluate you. Anything short of this and you will live to regret it.

You may need to see an orthopaedic doctor or a physiatrist. A physiatrist will evaluate and see if you are a candidate for an epidural/steroid type shot. Sometimes they will give it in a series of 2 or 3 in a given period of time. Depending on your response to the shot (if you are a candidate), the physiatrist can tell not only how much pain relief you did or did not get, but also if the level he/she injected is the one causing the problem or if it may be coming from another level in your back. A lot of times a back problem will cause your hip to hurt and your knee pain may or may not be related. This is what I would suggest, especially since it is affecting your sleep. This is a more conservative approach to surgery, and you never know if you will be successful or not unless you go that route. Some people go on to surgery, some don't, as they get relief from the injections. I would definitely check it out.

The chiropractor can make sure there is nothing out of place agrivating the situation - and use ultrasound to shrink muscle damage if there is any
The massage therapist can apply pressure where needed without the recoil factor that happens if we are trying to do it ourselves
The book at the bottom has the principles
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

What we need to know here it what is causing your back/hip and knee pain. Is it overuse...like you've been running too far on too rough of a surface? Or is this arthritic pain? Or are you into sports and have been injured? Not enough information to give you accurate advice, except to say that your medical doctor probably isn't the one to go to. You need to see an orthopedist who can accurately diagnose your situation with x-rays etc. and then prescribe medication for you. You may need muscle relaxants/pain medication and steroidal anti-inflammatory meds. Ibuprofen isn't always the best drug. Have you ever tried Aleve? Lastly, till you can get an appt, try ice to your knee/hip/and back. Ice is almost instant pain relief.

bflowgal7 has a good point...the treatment approach should depend on the cause of your pain. You mention "possible arthritis" but has that been confirmed? Have you discussed other tests? I'd love to tell you that massage will help, but maybe it is not a muscular problem? Maybe it's a disc related problem? Metabolic?
Try to get some more definitive answers from your doctor instead of having him give you drugs to "cover up" the pain. Only they can you truely find that appropriate treatment for your problem.
Best wishes.

I also suffer from Chronic Pain from a car accident I was in a few years back. I was the one at fault and i did not have insurance. I could not afford to go to a doctor so I did some research online and found an awesome Pain killer - Tramadol. Tramadol Ultram is great and it is available online with out a prior prescription first. Tramadol Ultram is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. It also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. Tramadol works by decreasing the brain's perception and response to pain. It also reduces the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. I found this very reliable website MedicationTramadol.Com. http://medicationtramadol.com/buytramadol.php . MedicationTramadol.com is a US licensed and Located Pharmacy which specializes in TramadolUltram. The best part is the give a FREE Tramadol Prescription with every Tramadol Online Order! Tramadol works wonders for me Dear. I hope my research helps you in your situation.

hi,
i have/had the same pains and took the same ibuprofen, no help here either from it. and doc's just won't give out pain meds like they used to. so it was recently suggested to me to see a chiropractor, they know the entire body, not just spines. i was hesitant to go see one, i had never been to one and i admit to a bit of fear. but the daily constant pain just got to be too much, so i thought i would give it a try. BEST thing i ever did!! i have seen my only 3 times but i will be seeing him weekly, then after all my adjustments to my body have been made, i will see him once a month for any adjustments that need to be made. and he, my chiro doc, suggested i go for some acupuncture. i will be looking into if i have ins. coverage for that. give it a try, i don't think you will be sorry. good luck!

Have you see a pain management specialist yet? I work for one, they can't always help, but maybe they can give you a proper diagnosis and suggest a solution.
DO NOT do a chiropractor, at least before you see a regular doctor.
