Sounds like you are on the launching pad to go anywhere you want to and must focus on the destination. Do you want to sing Opera? Start studying the Italian language. Would you like to be the next Bart Simpson, TMNT or other animation star? Is it rock 'n' roll for you or would you like to bash Simon Cowell on your very own talk show? Bob Dylan had a utilitarian voice and take his advice, "He not busy being born is busy dying." You have not been told you stink, you have been told you need to choose a direction.

Having a utilitarian voice simply means that it is practical. In my book - that's a good thing (with all the musical theatre I have done)!

I really hope that you were auditioning for a high school production and not a college production led by actual professors and those knowledgeable about acting.

The voice, granted, is important in acting, but the speech is only about like 10 percent. Acting is quite literally, "act" ing. It is about what you do, and letting those actions guide you further into the character.

It is the voice of someone who sings in the chorus, in the background, not the star. Not necessarily a bad thing, if you want to sing and enjoy it, you may always have work. Have you ever heard of someone who was a famous singer ending up in a chorus? I never have. They just disappear.

that means useful
i think it means it's not distinguished,
like maybe not star material but
very useful...probably in the background.
i'm no expert.
a utilitarian is someone who looks at function.
"how can i use this"
does not usually choose for beauty or other considerations.

it's not a bad thing, it just means that you're not using it as well as you could have. and if you work at it, your voice will be so much better. trust me on this, because i had almost the same situation.

Would the word "functional" make more sense? Same thing. I think they were trying to be polite in saying OK but not professional calibre..........
