Okay so I'm going to go travel to Italy, Rome but I live in U.S. They are COMPLETLY diffrent time zones. What can I do to get prepared or use to the time changes. I also have children 10 and 7 and they are very picky about going to sleep at their regular bedtime so any ideas? Please take this seriously, it is my first time traveling by plane to diffrent time zones.

While you're still in the US, try to go to bed gradually earlier than usual and waking up earlier than usual. It will help getting used to the time difference.

As for jet lag, while on the plane get as much rest as possible. Buy an eye mask (for you and your kids! haha), curl up with a pillow and blanket and try to get as much sleep as possible. Also drink plenty of water. Keeping hydrated is very important for your body to adjust.

When you get there it won't hurt to take a short nap. I went to London and they are 5 hours ahead of where I live. When I got there I took an hour nap and I had no more jet lag.

If you start feeling sick or lightheaded, don't try and push yourself to get through it. Jet lag happens to everyone and it's no fun. Take a rest when you need to.

Take an evening flight and sleep on the plane. I take a 630 PM flight from LA when I go to Europe, and I arrive, refreshed and ready to go when I land at 11 AM local time.
Keep in mind that it's better to stay up all day when you get there, except for a short nap.
Jet lag lasts about one day per time zone crossed if you try to do it gradually. I find that I'm over mine in about 3 days, instead of 8, by following this system.

I dont know about Italy, but when I went to the Phillippines I forced myself to get used to the time zones. After a 17 hour flight I got there and it was 5 A.M their time but 8 P.M my time. I stayed awake that whole day while I was there that when it was night I felt I was begging to go to bed. This is the way I quickly adjusted to the time change.

A helpful tip is that if your plane is arriving in the morning get as much sleep you can on the plane.

If arriving at night try to stay awake as much as possible.
Good Luck
Hope you have fun in Italy!

Isobel G, you will find the kids will be so jetlagged, they will sleep whenever the chance arises.
There is nothing you can do to get used to time zones.
My daughter read somewhere that you should try putting your kids to bed an hour earlier, a month before you leave, I said, that would have the kids getting up when you are going to bed, brilliant!!

even if u are prepared for the time change it will still cause jet lag, kids get this too, so be prepared for them to be fussy, and if they sleep on the plane they will be up and at it when u get there, and are tired yourself.
