DVD's are standard definition, and Blu-Rays are High-Def. *HD* DVD's have been shown to produce better sound and picture quality, as well as faster read speed (loads quicker) than Blu-Ray, but more production companies are going to blu-ray for some reason. I guess because it is harder to pirate (like it is actually doing anything to their business anyway)...

Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 25GB per layer, compared with about 8 for a DVD. This allows it to hold the extra information needed for high-definition movies. Regular DVDs have 480 horizontal lines of resolution. High definition has 720 or 1080 lines, which provide a much sharper picture on HD tv's.
