Shes one of those parents that if you tell them anything, you always end up getting yelled at. I'm not trying to say shes a REALLY bad person...but I can't even choose my own college. I can't do a lot of things. But I desperately need one. What is bi polar, and depression...i mean their differences?? Cuz I have a lot of symptoms of depression i think...I've gained 5 pounds, lack of sleep, random crying spells about the stupidest things, like when someone told me to shut up. But I was yelling at them for calling me a cutter...i'm constantly mad at myself. How do I tell her I want a phycologist? She has to sign a form...and im 14

Okay. Let me guess? Your Mom is the kind of Mom that freaks out when you do the smallest thing wrong, yells at you constantly, then wonders why you act so hostile towards her? I've known people like that and I understand that she's probably the LEAST understanding person when it comes to this and she'd just tell you to stop complaining and do the dishes. Are your problems from kids at school or something? 14 is an awfully young age to be feeling like this, that's a shame. Do you have a really close friend that you can talk to about all of this? If you do, I'm sure you might have already asked her about this. Hmm. I can't imagine that talking to a school counselor would be fun but...ARE there any you could talk to? If it IS kids at school, are any of your other friends going through this? I'm going through a similar problem if it is kids. I get called names a lot just because I don't like rap music and pretty skirts. Whatever though. I talked to my best friend about it because she was getting crap too, though not as bad as me. She was TONS of help and was always encouraging me to just stay up and not let myself fall. Just by hanging with her more and listening to her advice, as hard as it was at times, I've already noticed a change in my mood and attitude towards people. Try it. If you have someone like that, ask them for advice. They just might be right. Also, you could talk to me anytime since I'm going through a similar thing. I know it's strange talking to people you don't know off the internet but...I dunno. Just a suggestion. Try to have a great day, sweetie. I'm sure you're truly an amazing person. Try to realize it :]

Okay, breath. Parents sometimes can not see what is truly going on with their children, and unfortunately your mom seems to be one of the blind parents this country has produced. If you have the ability to talk to your mother about these issues, please do, she may surprise you and totally get you help. But if she does not, then it will be time for action on your part. I think that the first place to start would be your family doctor. They will know the difference between bi polar depression and puberty. I remember feeling terrible when I was 14yo., just so you know it does get better. So, something that I got from your question is that you are a cutter. There is deep rooted issues that are happening with this type of behavior. I suggest that if you are serious about getting help than you need to go to the emergency room at your local hospital and explain the seriousness of your situation. Tell them that you are in crisis and that you need for hipaa laws to protect you, in some states you can be emancipated and then you do not need parental permission at all.

14 is a rough age (at least it was for me - probably the worst age that I remember going through). Your hormones are kicking in and are at a constant fight with eachother, and because of that you are prone to mood swings (which unfortunately, means crying spells - sometimes with a cause and other times, just because). When I was that age, every little thing seemed to set me off into a horrible mood which included yelling, screaming, and fist-fighting usually with my sister.

The main differences are:
Depression - you feel like you don't want to do anything at all...don't want to hang out with your firends, go to a mall, go to the movies, nothing. You don't find anything enjoyable in anything that you used to like doing (hobbies, sports, friends, and so on). You tend to sleep a lot (but at 14, your body requires more sleep anyway because of the hormone changes it is going through).

Bi-polar:
You go through major mood swings that go back and forth from depression to extremely active and happy. There really isn't anything that you can identify that causes the mood swings, they shift on their own.

If you want to see a psychologist, then talk to your guidance councelor at school and they can help you talk to your mom about it.

Be aware of the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist...a psychiatrist can prescribe meds, a psychologist can't. The only thing that I would be careful of is that a lot of these councelors push medications on people that don't need it. Hormone changes at your age can cause the same symptoms as bi-polar, but the person isn't bi-polar. And the next thing they know, they are on a medication that they don't need. It can have devastating side-effects if they don't need it (I recently went through it). I was put on Prozac because the doctor thought I was slightly depressed...well, I wasn't...I was just tired of the anxiety I had from a hormone inbalance (I'm 36).

I had an extremely bad reaction to the medication and it takes 2 weeks for that medication to get out of the body. For 2 weeks, I went through a horrible time. I've just ended that period - Thank God!

That being said, you may find talking to someone very helpful - my neice had a hard time at that age, and she found it very helpful.

Good luck with everything...I hope it works out.

You could talk to someone u trust at school ie; teacher, principal and arrange a meeting between the 3 of you. It will keep her caalm and she will have someone with training to answer her questions. I developed my bi polar issues when I was about your age and something you need to remember is that if you do have bi polar it presents differently in a 14 year old than it does with an adult. So you need to see a child pshycologist and when you see him/her tell them as much as u can. In fact start a journal right now so they can see exactly how your moods and thoughts change. It is sooooooooo important for you to find out asap. Bipolar is much harder to treat the longer you go without a diagnosis. Good luck, darlin. Its a struggle to deal with a depression of anykind but you can do it. Trust me.

Honestly, you need to just tell her. She might freak out and maybe blame herself cause she thinks she might have parented wrong or something but being a 26 year old and having gone through all that.... if you feel you need to go then go. I went as a child and it helped off and on. Bi-polar brings major mood swings whereas depression is that.... being depressed.
