I'd like to burn a copy of it to pass on to other relatives. Can I use an ordinary CD-R or do I have to get another DVD? it's so cool to be able to watch and reminisce about old childhood memories from my computer monitor! GAWD I LOVE this technology!

Changing to CD media (technically a VCD) involves re-encoding the material. For a true copy, use DVD media and burner.

A DVD can hold up to 4 hours of video. A CD only holds about 10 minutes of video. Odds are your family videos would not fit on a CD.
