From questions on depression and its sequel, I answered some but some queries still pour in for practical advice or even doubts regarding how to cope with it or what to do. I've been touched and unhappy once I know some did unthinkable crimes even to his family members from local or national news reports. Such depressive minds need tactful care and advice as well as professional consultation and medication. Would it be better for us to help those in need, say, by means of this great web site or some means of "social literacy"?. Your response and ideas are appreciated, thanks.

There are websites and webcommunity support groups out there. If you want to reffer people to these sites that might be a good idea. I also like your idea about "social literacy". I guess we should just try to do the best we can and use our judgement.

When someone with a problem comes here with a question or looking for help, most of us are not licenced professionals in this area. The reason they are coming her is probably because they aren't ready yet to talk to a professional because it's still "Taboo". Report negative/abusive posts which can cause further embarressment/depression for the poster so those posts can be removed. And we should try to be as supportive as possible. These people came here to see how their "peers" would respond. How we respond here - is what they expect their "peers" in the real world to respond like. Which is why something has to be done about sarcastic responses. We should share our experience, empathise, and give advice based on what we have been through. And be gentle about how you tell someone to get "Professional Help". People are still afraid/sensitive to suggestions like that.

I'm not sure how to help the people here with depressive issues, but I want to make a positive note that I received a lot of helpful information here. I've been in some distress about changing my medicine for ADHD and have received a lot of good advice and support on this board. Some folks are being helped, so I just wanted to say say something positive :)

I have felt the same concerns you are speaking of. I think all one can do in this type of forum is to be encouraging and if possible refer the individual to some sort of support group via a website or phone number that can be of more specific and long term help for the persons' specific needs (alcoholism, addictions, depression, etc.) The negative responses that a person subjects themselves to when discussing this here can be depressing in itself. On the other hand, it can be hard to tell in this forum when someone is serious or mocking.

as you can clearly see from some of the above responses that this idea may do more harm than good, the individual may be in a state of mind where they are open to any suggestions as their depression has taken over and they have no ability to make the right choice , some could dtake advantage of this and even worse some may take this as a good alternative to treatment...you idea has merit but within a confined space with people of like problems...why not start a site with this type of forum but have it opened to clinics where people can log in after being given access by their therapist ...this would be a free service yet with restrictive access ...

i could go but you get my idea..

hey if i see this being sold by Yahoo...i want royalties..lol

Social literacy. By educating everyone maybe this awful mental disease can be made to become treatable instead of I need to hide this. The social status put on something has everything to do with whether people will reach out for help and not be ashamed.

great question, this form has great advice but its mostly followed up by "see your doctor" We cant play doctor or tell someone what they have. We can give symptoms and hope and listen but we cant treat people having mental health problems. We give great advice for locating free help or state programs or helping a 12 year old with cutting. Its easy to ask a question to a stranger you will never see.

I'm not to sure what your asking here...

if somoeone is depressed, and needs help..often the person may not relise they need more help then just advice. That is something a dr. needs to be seen about. People can advice those who ask, to go talk to their dr, and whatever happenes from there is pretty much what we can do.

again...really not to sure what it is you are seeking.

we can hang out with them and be friends with them, go do something fun as an amusement park with them, or do a sport and get them to exercise, i heard that helps it get out of your mind, because your so into it, so do something they are interested in also.
