It is an old spelling of "ether."
It is the name of a chemical used as an anesthetic.
In the past, it was also the name of the upper air. Long ago when the earth was still considered the center of the universe, it was thought that beyond the orbit of the moon, the space was filled with ether, a purer and more subtle substance than regular air. The stars were up in the ether.

aether is a medium that in the wave theory of light permeates all space and transmits transverse waves.

By the way, I got a notice that you put me on a contact list but I have no idea what it means or how to use it. There was no e-mail address to contact you with.

The e-mail through Answers! is limited and you can't attach things, so my e-mail is nontien@msn.com.
Anyway - you seem be involved with subjects that lead me to believe you are pretty intelligent.

The word "aether" stems via Latin from the Greek αἰθήρ, from a root meaning "to kindle/burn/shine", which signified the substance thought in ancient times to fill the upper regions of space, beyond the clouds.

It's usually spelled ether. It was formerly believed to fill space and light traveled through it. People couldn't believe that light could travel through nothing.

I think you mean either. Either is having a choice between two or more things. Example: You can either have chocolate ice cream or strawberry ice cream with your cake.
