I have been taking piano for eight years so that is the thing that is most important to me. However, I believe it is great to always have a sport. I have been taking swim but it just hasn't been very fun, and I would like to switch. Karate is something I would like to switch to, but I do not want to hurt my fingers. Will it hurt my fingers very often? I know finger injuries are hard to avoid but I do not want them to happen very often. Also, what are some pros and cons to karate that I can tell my parents to convince them that I truly want to switch?

If you worry about hurting your fingers, you'll hurt them. However, if you execute a hand technique properly by keeping your fingers tight (not letting them flop around), you'll be fine. I've been studying Shito-Ryu for 13 years and haven't had a problem yet.

In any sport injuries is one thing you have to keep in mind. Depending on how you use the fingers you could get hurt. If you are planning on a piano playing career, avoid using on fingers in karate, which is almost impossible not to.

when you get out of bed till the time you go back to bed there is a possibility of injury or death.do you stay in bed to avoid that possibility?heres some info and a link where you can get info on the benifits of karate to present to your parents.
A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's.
The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.

yes karate can hurt your fingers... but it really helps your fingers ...it will hurt but it will make thim stronger... it will be more flexible to the point you can pull thim back as fare as you can with out hurting or breaking thim.... but if your in a good school then they will teache you the right way how to do things..... and if your just starting out then you wont do a lot of things that would hurt you every much... but if you dont do a lot of sports or your not athletic then if you go to a traditional school then your uper arms and legs will be hurting the most... the most things you do with the fingers is a standing jujutsu and breaking ....

First, no parent should make you do something you don't enjoy. If you don't like swimming, then just tel lthem you want to try karate or quit swimming all together.

Unless you take karate at a place that wants you to break boards (which you won't do as a beginner) then you will be okay.

There is always a chance you could injure a finger during sparring. Even if you do not spar, you could still injure your finger, but I doubt it would be a serious injury. Finger injuries in my career ranged from bruised and tweaked to dis-located and fractured. I had more of the former than the latter.

My fingers and hands have got a lot stronger so far. Been practicing standing and walking upside down. Other than that the only finger related injury i heard about was when this guy messed his knuckles up badly from punching a block of wood repeatedly over and over when he clearly shouldnt have.

In karate you can hurt your fingers. You usually hurt them sparring or fighting. But you usually dont start sparring till higher level belts. Most of the time you train on dummies and they are usually rubber so you probably will not get hurt doing karate till you are older.

Probably not unless you have an accident or do something wrong.

You could break 4 fingers by slamming a car door on your hand too!

Karate will not hurt your fingers if you "keep your hands closed tightly"

If you're really scared of messing up your hands, throw more kicks. :)
