Does anyone know why wooden bricks were used as flooring in the construction of steel mills?

I worked many years in a factory. I asked a few times about the wooden floor blocks. I was told they absorb sound, lessen worker's fatigue, prevent piecepart damage when parts are dropped, and preserve the concrete they cover.
