As a manager of two loft-style apartment buildings in downtown Denver, I can tell you it's going to be very difficult. Most property management companies that own or manage rental communities have restrictions on breeds based on liability.

My company (the largest owner and operator of apartment communities in the US) does not allow pit bulls, bull terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Chows, German Shepards, Akitas, Huskies, Rottwielers, Dobermans, Presa Canarios, or wolf hybrids. Full blood or mixed in any percentage are prohibited, except dogs trained to assist the disabled and active duty canine police offers residing with an active duty law enforcement officer.

The reason? All of these breeds are very territorial and it has nothing to do with the way they are raised. Dogs that instinctively defend thier territory or owners can be dangerous to others, especially children in the community who are not familiar with animals. Our liability insurance will not cover us in case of an attack, and it's pretty much guaranteed that if we were to allow these animals and one of them attacked another resident, not only would you be sued, but we would as well.

My suggestion to you would be to find a small apartment house that is owned by a single owner, maybe one that only has 12 apartments or so, who will allow your pet. The only other options are to rent a house where the owner will allow your pets, or buy a home yourself.

Get references from your current and last neighbours stating that the dog isnt a nuisance or threat. Also ask your last landlord for references stating that the dog did no damage to the property and that no complaints were lodged. Then when you apply for a place add copies to your application. A vet statement saying your dog is healthy and is flea and pest free would help too. Sorry i cant help you further, but unless the owners say no pets up front they actually cant discriminate you for owning a dog, same as they cant discriminate against you for having children. As far as i know Garland is looking at breed specific legislation that requires pit bull owner to meet high standards to own one eg certain height fences, registration, vet checks and possible yearly temperment testing. If this goes thru i would suggest moving town as renting with a pit bull will be difficult and pricey. Disgusting isnt it.I own dobermans and one bull arab and i just found out that some american counties have a ban in place for these breeds and others such as rottweilers, german shepherds and chows? Lynnville, Tennessee has banned all these, and Smithfield, Utah has banned rotties and SHAR-PEIS, but not pits. Stupidity at the next level, mental. Mind you more places have banned rotties and dobes than pits.

might wanna try to look into renting houses...it took me months to find an apartment where i live because of my husky!! most apartment complexes don't allow aggressive breeds and they'll use this from akc.org website that says aggressive breeds.... oh also... ask them about an AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program.... they said that i could get the apartment and they'll allow my dog as long as i got a certificate from the AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program !! check it out and read about it on AKC's website and they might let you rent one of their apartments and keep your dog as long as you have this!! its basically saying hey.. your dog isn't aggressive and will love being around other people and dogs!! i hope this helps!! good luck

oh also like mzbryana said... tell them its American Staffordshire Terrier they look just alike

I dont know of any apartments but I can tell you that getting renters insurance that covers your dog looks good to lanlords also if your dog has done training have the trainer write up a recommendation for your dogs good behavior. Even better get your dog his CGC (canine good citizen) award.

I had that problem with mine, with looking at apts. say he is an Am Staff (even though there is no difference)

They wont know the difference. But if you are having trouble finding apts. that allow pets in general, just keep looking on the interent....GOOD LUCK
