I know it's some sort of throw back to the draft, unless my information's wrong. What does this registration serve? Why is it mandatory? What happens to a man if he doesn't register?

America needs soldiers to fight in the wars that it wanted to wage. Thus, it is mandatory for men turning 18 to register for the Selective Service so that they could be activated in case when needed.

Yes though it was for the draft in the past mostly it also has other issues as a result so you still must register.

Regan brought it back in '81 when he started fomenting revolutions in S. America. Can you imagine if it was women that were being systematically discriminated against in being told that only they had to register to lay down their lives for the next time a president decides to reinstate the draft?!

It is because the USA has to be prepared in the event the draft is needed.

It is the law. And, if a young man of age fails to register, he can be denied federal student loans, be ineligible for some jobs, might not get a driver's license, not qualify for some house loans....so register. Save yourself a lot of inconvenience.

Still, I think it's wrong that young women of age, who reap all the benefits of "equality", don't have to assume the responsibilities of "equality". I think young women should have to register too.
