It looks like track could be the perfect fit for you. It is very much an individual as opposed to a team sport. Success can be measured not only in wins but also in self improvement. Often you can choose training that can be done alone or in groups. You say that you are told that you are pretty fast but even if you weren't you could begin training on your own and compare times and see where you fit with the local team. You should set achievable goals and then go out, train and reach those goals. And then set new goals etc. It's really a no lose situation. Begin by running just for yourself, as you improve, it will feel good knowing that your hard work has paid off. This will lead to a higher self esteem and eventually will lead to wins on the track. I loved track, anyone can do it. It's mind over matter more then anything else cuz anyone can run. It's about not giving up when your legs are on fire and you are gasping for breath. Do you like to compete, even if it is against your own time? I think the 400 is the hardest event in track (you sprint on balls of your feet a long distance), for me the mile was not that bad. It really helped me in college and after, I'm doing triathalons now. I'm tough and determined and I know track helped me become that way. P.s. our best runners were small/short, determination was the best factor on how good you were. Don't worry a bit about the time factor, the training will get you ready and you will be doing 6 minute miles in no time....

You'll love track! One of the first things you will notice with a track team is that the majority of serious runners 'aren't quite like everybody else'. I'm not saying we're antisocial or troubled like that somehow, but you'll notice there's a slightly different personality on a track team than there would be on any other team. You wouldn't be the first person (not at all) to go into track a bit unsure of how you'll handle it, yet end up one of the more social people around at the end of the season.
If you like to run, and you're interested in being athletic ... well surely track is the right place to be. There isn't much around that's more athletic than track (which used to be called "athletics"). Even better yet, when you're in the middle of a race, I will guarantee you that you're able to focus on the race, the people in the race, and nothing else. My friends and I on my team rarely, if ever notice the crowd when we're in a race. I've been in races were championships were being decided, and never noticed the people leaning almost into the track , cheering. You'll be "in the zone."
I hope you do join the team, and have fun with it!

Sad to say, track meet do not draw crowds. If you attend one, you will mostly see the few parents who can get off of work in time to make it to a 4 PM event. So, don't worry about the crowds.
Track is a great sport because it has so many events that you'll fit somewhere. If you are a decent runner your coach will help you to find your best events, and you can work to improve as the season goes along. In track everyone has a PR...their best time for each event. So even if you keep improving your PR, that is an accomplishment.
If you love to run, go on faith, and God will work it out that you find a friend on the team, and a place where you fit in.
If you didn't sign up, you better go find the coach, because track is starting right now!
Good luck!

Join a track team. People will not laugh at you even if you come in last every time. Believe me, my first season of track I came in last every time. By the end of the season I guarantee you will improve if you take practice seriously. Once you get into the race, you don't think about the spectators. Just concentrate on a person you can pace with, at least at the beginning.

don't worry about it. track is a great way to boost self confidence. just by being on the team you will make friends. I am shy myself and doing track freshman year helped me out a lot and now i'm friends with the whole team (junior year). people wouldn't laugh at you because there are people of every level and ability and everyone competes. that is what is so great about track. You should definitely join the team.

I'm a pretty shy person and I hate crowds (I'm in track) I try to just focus on what I'm doing and do my best not to pay attention to every one around me (it's extremely hard) Try not to think about people laughing at you because chances are they aren't going to make fun of you or laugh at you.
Good luck

Give it a shot. It's a great sport and I'm sure through your practices and work with coaches and teammates you will be able to overcome your fears as well as make some friends.
