How about a stuffed dog? No, seriously, no one can really accurately answer this question for you. You haven't told us anything about your work schedule, your financial situation, your lifestyle, your activity level, your home situation, etc. Any answers you get will just be uneducated guesses from children telling you their favourite dog - dogs that may be a terrible match for you.

The best thing you can do is visit a shelter or rescue group and see if a dog fits your needs. http://www.petfinder.com The next best thing is to watch a dog show - they are constantly on Animal Planet and USA and write down maybe 10 breeds that appeals to you. From there, visit http://www.akc.org and go to the "breed" area. On the left will be a link to the breed flyer, breed club, and breed rescue group. Click on each one and learn as much about the breed as possible.

From there if you decide you want a purebred puppy, read sites like

http://dogplay.com/gettingdog/index.html...
and
http://www.geocities.com/bluegracepwd/wh...

to help you find a reputable breeder.

Good luck to you

You need to give a lot more information - all this is subjective. A good place to start is petfinder.com - take the quiz - includes your lifestyle, financial capability, dog traits and needs. That will give you a list of potentials which you can then research to help you narrow down to the right dog for you. Remember - if they aren't happy - you aren't happy. A puppy is a lifelong commitment - make sure you understand what you are getting in to - they live a long time. Also, think carefully about a puppy (you need a LOT of time & money) versus maybe a rescue or shelter older dog - many are already housebroken, have shots, are neutered and have basic training - some ara also emotionally scarred. You can get purebreds this way for very little cash outlay - you can "try them out" too.

I love maltese and Yorkies to. I have several maltese and
I live in a condo. They get plenty of exercise inside, they
play and chase each other around, and when the weather
is really nice, I take them to the park. They are small dogs,
but they do love to play outside to. They don't run around
like large dogs do, but they are small enough to take
anywhere, and they look beautiful. Their hair does not
compare to any dog. They just look so good.

Something like a Cock-a-Poo, a Peke/Mix, a Lhasa Mix. These dogs are on the small size, and don't need much exercise. All dogs require daily walks.

Lost my dog a few weeks ago. Her name was Nikki. She was 13 years old, and one day she just laid down and died.

Nikki is a Queensland Heeler. Very smart. She laid at my feet when I played my guitar and kept my feet warm. God, I loved that dog....but I'm rambling!

My sister has a Jack Russell Terrier (is that the correct the name?). She calls her Domino.

Domino is loving, alert, and is very smart. When I visit, and take off my shoes , Domino take one of them to her bed.

They are a good house dog...When I get another dog...it will be a Jack Russel. They are not cheap...

How about a miniature schnauzer? They are beautiful dogs, not overly small and although terriers aren't quite as high strung as most.
