So this crazed madman, for the laugh, let's say he's an athiest democrat (tee hee!) comes into your house and points a gun at your spouse and kids or partner, whatever, someone you love deeply.

Now he's crazy, and he WILL do it, and he threatens to shoot them all (typical american gun culture, tut tut.) if you don't renounce god.

DO you let your family die for the sake of just saying the words "I do not believe in God", even if you don't mean it?

Ah athiests, irony seems to be lost on you! Didn't you see that little glint of mischief in my question?!

My family and I have an emergency plan for just this scenario.

When the guy comes into our house. We launch into a tightly choreographed version of the Talking Heads "Slippery People" We hold hands and do and ancient Greek wedding dance around the guy while singing in four part harmony:

"Put away that gun
This part is simple
Try to recognize
What is in you mind
God help us!
Help us loose our minds
These slippery people
help us understand

(the chorus that follows is sung as a responsive between male and female voices)

what's the matter with him? He's alright!
I see his face The lord won't mind
Don't play no games He's alright
Love from the bottom to the top
Turn like a wheel He's alright
See for yourself The lord won't mind
We're gonna move Right now
Turn like a wheel inside a wheel"

Although we have not proved the effectiveness of this technique on a real gunman, we did try a "dry run" on a postal mail carrier and that person never came back.
Hope this helps

When I did believe in a God, (a long time ago) I would absolutely have answered no to this question. I would have been fine with dying for what I believed in.

That was before I grew up a bit and realized that the idea of an omnipotent deity was not helping me live me life to the fullest. Now, I would be fine renouncing a god, because I don't believe one exists.

Trouble would start if a gunman asked me to reounce my belief in the goodness of humanity. I would have trouble doing that. The irony would be pretty amazing though, eh? Being killed by another human being for refusing to say that people aren't good?

But I digress..

Based on my level of spirituality and religion in this situation, I would draw the conclusion that this was a test. I would probably refuse to renounce my faith in a higher power (not God per se) and hope that a higher power would protect my family and myself from harm- and then again everything happens for a reason so this guy with the gun in this crazed scenario is at my door for a reason.

With all due respect to God and country, the blogbaba would without a doubt kill the gun welding insane man who was threatening the blogbaba's family. How the authorities wanted to play out the aftermath is fine by me, but without a doubt the guy threatening my family is meat. I WILL take him completely out before I succumb to the gun shots I will have to absorb to get to the poor SOB.

I wouldn't renounce God, my family knows I wouldn't. God is my God, I've defined my character, my actions and my beliefs around him. I've raised my children on the teachings of God and for them to love God. I've pledged my heart to my husband in front of God and man, what kind of person would I be if I renounce everything I've put forth. Alive? maybe, but you are betting on a madman. Dead, most likely, but I stood my ground.

I would not renounce or deny God Almighty and if the madman did kill us, he would just send us on the Glory and he would be stuck down here in hell to pay the price, both here and in the after live. So we win either way.

Yes, I would rather die than denounce God. I would also look my children straight in the eyes and tell them that it is better to die than to denounce God and I would tell them I love you, I'll see you in the arms of the Lord! My 11 year old knows this even, and would have no problem with it.

Are you asking if I would say I don't believe in God if my option was God or my family?
If so, the answer is yes, I would say it. I feel like God made me feel strongly about my family, that he would understand if I wanted to protect them. I know, not the correct Christian answer, but I will always choose my family.

Thats a tough one...I heard they did that in the Columbine shootings.

Me...I would charge the man with the gun while saying a prayer...then beat the be-Jesus out of the man with his own gun...if I got that far.

Atleast I didn't denounce God.

Actually I can’t believe someone is so ignorant to really think Democrats are not Christians and Republicans are. It really amazes me the stupidity of some!
