My 1 1/2 year old basset hound keeps throwing up, almost on a daily basis. It isn't food usually. Usually it is yellow foamy looking bile. She doesn't seem to be sick in any other way at all. She knows when it is coming and usually heads towards the door. After she throws up she acts fine like nothing was wrong. I might just have to take her to the vet, but I didn't know if there was something simple I could do. She chews up a lot of stuff like cardboard boxes and the carpet!!! The only reason I don't think that is the problem is because there is rarely anything in the vomit!! HELP PLEASE!!

Just to make it clear, I DO NOT condone my dog eating cardboard and the carpet, but she does it when we leave and don't lock her up, or at night while we sleep on while I am in the shower. I try to make sure she doesn't do it, but we are very busy and I don't want to lock her up all the time! Trust me, it is not something I just sit there and watch and allow her to do!

Don't you just hate it when sooo many other people take a decent concerned question and make you out to be the bad guy.
Dogs do this kind of thing all the time.Ever see a dog trying to eat grass. . .I'm told that they do this as the grass has something in it that soothes their stomachs.
Provided that your dog hasn't ingested something that will really hurt them. . . like antifreeze(they say it has a sweet taste and dogs are attracted to it but it is highly toxic to them)
Is there anything out of the ordinary that the dog does or eats other than the things that the puppiness in him gets him into?
Is the dog using the bathroom as usual? Are there any changes in his stool etc?
Believe it or not a small of Pepto Bismol can help alot but I would not replace this with the fact that since the dog is doing this everyday, the is quite possibly something wrong. Pepto will atleast help keep him somewhat comfortable before getting him to the vet.
This dog may have ingested something that either isn't digesting or is stuck in the stomach or possibly the intestines.
Always better to be safe than sorry.

Good Luck

call the vet. i have a friend with a dog that would throw up almost every day, but then she started to give him just a little scrap of her dinner and that seemed to calm his stomach. also she could be eating these thing because she wants something different in her system, so you could try not letting her have have the carpet and boxes and give her a little piece of your own food, still ask a vet though.

What you need to do is first change the food. Find a product for sensitive stomachs. Nutro is one of the best ones out there for special needs dogs. Stay away from Science Diet. If the bile has any trace of blood in it or the dog's stool is black and tarry looking or has any blood in it, get to the vet IMMEDIATELY! This may indicate your dog may have canine collitis. Sometimes it may just be a reaction to something she shouldn't been eating(sock, plastic, etc.),because she is still a "puppy", but I would still watch for the symptoms I mentioned before.

TAKE HER TO THE VET RIGHT AWAY! my dog had teh same thign wrong with her, we didnt think it was anythign serious adn thoguth it was just from her eating a certain kind of food. we had to put her down a couple days ago. The vets never did figure out what was wrong with her... but be certain to take her to the vet... it may be a serious matter. and keep cardboard and carpet away from her. if nessescary put her in a big cage at ngiht so she doesnt eat ur furniture and things.

How long has this been going on? If it has been going on since he was a puppy, it could be something anatomical. Does your dog have a fever? Is he at an appropriate weight?

I'm sure that there are a whole lot of things that could cause this. I'm not a vet though, plus I'm not very smart. If it keeps up, you may want to seek a professional's help.

I really hate when I read other responses before I give one and they all say 'Take your dog to the vet', but in this case...

Take your dog to the vet. Yellow Bile is not a good sign, especially when he throws up just about everyday. It isn't good for his stomach.

Any vomiting--even on a semi-regular basis--should be watched closely.

In the meantime, why are you letting your dog chew stuff up? Seems to me the more stuff she eats that isnt' food, the more she's going to be throwing up. Even if there's no 'stuff' in her vomit, eating foreign things isn't good for dogs. Make sure that stops.

The simplest thing to do is call your vet and ask them their opinion--phone calls and advice are free.

When dogs have upset stomachs they go out and eat grass. That might be what she is trying to do when she eats the carpet. Do you live where there is snow right now? If so, try buying some pet grass. I recently saw some at my local Pet Co. Everyone else's suggestions are good too but thought I would add this one thing.

My dogs both throw up when they are hungry. Do you have her on a set feeding schedule? I know if I am late with the morning feeding, they will vomit. I hope it is nothing serious, best of luck to you and your fur baby.
