I have the biggest fear of dentists. I have to go to one pretty soon and I shake just thinking of it. I don't want to tell my mom because she doesn't really help. I may need fillings and am really scared. Last time I went, they pulled a tooth out and only used laughing gas. It hurt sooo bad. What should I do to help calm myself?I want to be able to sleep easily at night! Should my mom come with me or not?

Dear Hieichan,
I used to be terrified just like you. Scared of the pain or scared of the needle. But then I found out that the dentists have lidocaine salve which they can put on a long qtip and insert under your tongue. After you have this in your mouth for 5 minutes, your sore area is deadened and you won't feel any shots or any drilling. Ask for it. Ask for it every time. And don't let the dentist take out the qtip until at least 5 minutes have elapsed and until you really feel the sore area deadened. Hope this helps.

If you would feel more comfortable with your Mom than yes, have her in the room with you. Make sure you go to a gentle dentist that understands how scared you are. Some dentist are better with dentalphobes than others. If you need to have a filling or another extraction ask if they do sedation dentistry. If they don't ask if they can refer you to someone who does. It may even help to see a pediatric dentist.

Good Luck.

Calm down,
Does your dentist prescribe Halcion or valium? Especially if your mom is driving you could take a little sedative.
We sometimes have patients take benedryl before they come in.
Lot's of options, you should be comfortable in asking your dentist for ways to relax.
We understand patient fears and their is no reason to be afraid, when you can relax with a little pill.
See if your dentist has been to any oral sedation courses.
Good Luck.

If it helps, your not alone.I'm terrified of them myself.Whats worse .... the needle for novacane,or the drill?Hmm.If you have to have a toothe pulled jee, tell your mom to see an oral sergion. They put you out and you feel NOTHING!I had several teeth pulled cause of an auto accident(facial damage)and the dentist was a monster.I went to an oral sergion to 'correct' the damage.I think laughing gas is stupid. You feel the pain, but laugh later.??Just knock me out.Have a REAL talk with your mom.

Honey, I know what you mean. I've always been scared to go to the dentist. If I were you I would take my mom. Also try to not think about it til the time comes to go. I know that's easier said than done when your scared. Good Luck!

im only 14 and its okay to be scared bring something to squeeze when they do their work. After the pain u should rinse with warm salt water and ask for a numbing shot it only feels like a pinch i got the first shot in my mouth only at the age of 10 i was fine. And keep your thoughts on good things.

I used to be scared of dentists.
Just when you go in don't look at the tools, close your eyes...go to a happy place.

If you want your mom to come don't be ashamed to ask.

All this will help in the long run.

No pain No gain.
