poodles are said to be the smartest dogs

2007-03-08 12:49:32 · answer #1 · answered by Briana 2 · 0 2

Yeah, it's generally said to be Border Collies. Herding dogs had to evolve to accomplish pretty complex tasks. Sporting dogs like Labs and Golden Retrievers are pretty smart too for the same reason, working closely with humans to carry out complex tasks. Way back when, if they weren't smart enough to get it right, they'd be drowned.

Of course, it depends on what kind of stuff you want the dog to be good at.

I can't believe somebody said Akitas. They actually rank as one of the dumbest breeds according to a lot of lists. What the hell are they good for anyway? And Jack Russels? There are some smart ones, but really they aren't all that bright compared to other breeds. And it makes sense. Being developed to chase animals into their holes, it would seem balls would be valued highly over brains.

From the answers so far, I think everyone thinks their favorite breed is the smartest. I'd be willing to agree that Border Collies are incredibly smart as a rule. I have known individual dogs who were frighteningly smart...smarter than most people. One of them was a Samoyed I owned for 14 years...he not only knew what you wanted him to do without having to say it, he had already figured out how not to do it. One of my current Boxers is almost that clever and has a better attitude; perhaps he's the smartest one of all.

Nonetheless, one man’s opinion lists the top 5 breeds for canine intelligence as the Border Collie, Poodle, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Doberman Pinscher.

Studies show that that title belongs to Border Collies. I just don't know if it's not that they are easier to train. My favorite is the German Shepherd Dog. Not are they extremely intelligent, they are far more versatile than most other dogs. They do police work, rescue work, herding, guide dog, obedience and are so gentle with kids.

They actually have rated this, the #1 smartest dog is the Border Collie. However, they need lots of mental stimulation or they will tear apart your house. Next is the Poodle, then the German Shephard, and fourth and fifth is the Lab and Golden Retriever.

Border Collies are the smartest.
Greyhounds are the fastest.
GreatDane's are the biggest.
A best mix of all those is the German Shepard and Czecoslovokain wolf-dog.

Heinz 57's, also known as mutts. They are smarter, and easier to train. This is actually quoting my vet...

BTW, I have 2 of them. Breeds can be nice to look at, but mutts can be very unique in looks, usually have the best of each breed in them, and have less health issues.
