I plan on joining the Air Force this year. Of course when joining i know that you serve your country and have to follow orders even if your in the front line. my situation is i have a family and for them i was wondering what MOS (military occupational specialty) would most likely not get me sent to war?

If you don't want to deploy then don't join.

Well, joining the Air Force or Navy is a start. The Army and Marines take up 98% of the forces on ground and they both have the longest deployments. So if you want to feel safe and secure, join the AF or Navy. If you want to be a difference maker join the Military (Marines or Army) your choice.

Iraq deployments = 2 x 1 year deployments

Are you joining up for the paycheck, the education, or to serve your country?

If it the paycheck, well, if you are smart enough to join the Air Force in a specialty capacity, you could find another jobs that allows you to stay close to your family.

If it is the education, you need to assess your strong areas of focus, scholarship potentials , and your desire to succeed...you need to work hard to make that happen...

If it is to serve your country, then you go where your country sends you, without questions, in defence of your country's values...the way true military men have always done...if you don't believe in your country's values, you would be endangering others if you went over to Iraq

I am Canadian, and it saddens me to hear your story...

If serving your country is a priority for you, then sign up, no can guarantee that they wont be sent anywhere, you could end up in Iceland or Antarctica, wishing you were somewhere else, you've already made the decision to join, now do it and serve proudly, as far as a job description that would keep you out of harms way , i imagine maybe cook or chaplains assistant,, however, in the army, these same cooks and chaplains assistants have been put in infantry type positions when needed. While going to war is not a natural act, it must be done, thats how our country was founded.

I sure hope you are not one of those people that want to join the military for a "free" college education, then spend your entire service obligation trying to weasel out of deploying or otherwise pulling your weight in the military. I have tossed a boat load of whiners out of the military because they spent more time trying to beat the system to get their free college and GI benefits than they did working. If you don't want to go to war, then the military is the wrong place for you. It's like saying you want to be a lifeguard, but don't want to have to swim. It's part of the deal.

If you don't wanna go to Iraq, you are off to a good start by joing the Air Force. Not many of them there. As far as mos, makes no diff, anyone can be sent.

Ummmm...BY NOT JOINING?!? It's pretty obvious! We're at war. Soldiers go to war. If you don't want to go to war, don't be a soldier!

That's one of the many reasons I'm not in the military. I wouldn't have a problem joining up to defend my country. However, defending the country (finding Osama, stabilizing Afghanistan, homeland security, etc) doesn't seem to be a high priority for our government these days. They instead seem only interested in conducting invasions of countries that have NO WMDs, NO clear ties to Osama, and NOTHING to do with 9/11, so I don't plan on joining anytime soon. I'd prefer not to be used as an expendable political tool for furthering the corrupt government's self-serving agenda. It's sad that there are so many people in our country who approve of our brave soldiers being used by our government in this fashion.

First off, they don't have MOS in the Air Force. You have an AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code).

There are NO AFSCs that will guarantee that you don't go. Anyone can go at anytime.

I am a Spanish Linguist... what need do they have for me in Iraq?... excellent question and yet here I am.

So, just exactly why are you joining the military if you are not willing to go into battle if that is asked of you?

If you don't want to fight STAY OUT OF THE MILITARY! There are other ways to serve your country.

ALL Branches of the military(including the Coast Guard) have bodies in or around Afghanist and and Iraq. ALL job specialties have the potential to deploy.

You don't get to choose where you deploy to, and you don't get to choose to stay behind if you are called to go. if you are unwilling to go anywhere you are sent for any reason and at any time, do not enlist.

"the j" doesn't know what he is talking about. The MILITARY'S NEEDS COME FIRST!!! It doesn't make a difference if you are in school or not. Nor does it make a difference if you have family. If you don't want to go to Iraq the best way to stay away is to NOT JOIN. It doesn't make a difference what your A.F.S.C. (M.O.S. is what the Army calls it) is, they will train you to do something different, perhaps K.P. duty (washing dishes) if they need you bad enough. If you are going to make that commitment you better be ready to give the ultimate sacrafice, your life!!!
