I think the mom is feeding the baby too much. When I check on them the crop is always full. I don't want to attempt to hand feed but I'm debating taking the male out. Maybe both parents feeding is too much. I might add this is their first baby.

Don't worry!

They will not overfeed it. Only humans seem to do that.

Aww, congratulations on your new little bird! From my experience, baby cockatiels are almost constantly hungry so he probably greatly appreciates all the attention he's getting right now. If they're first time parents and he's the only chick, it's possible that they're spoiling him a little bit, but I don't think you have anything to worry about and it sounds like he's being very well taken care of. Also, are there more eggs that haven't hatched yet? Cockatieles usually have between four and six eggs in a clutch and at least three of these should hatch, unless they didn't incubate them properly. If any new brothers or sisters hatch, then the parents time will be divided more naturally and there will be even less to worry about than there is now.

Cockatiels males make just as good parents as the females do and the birds mate for life, so it's probably not a good idea to take your guy away. He would become very agitated and the girl would be tired and lonely from suddenly having to do all the work herself. Also, cockatiels tend to get very protective and even vicious when they have chicks, so be careful about scaring tem or trying to take them away from their chicks if there's any chance that they might bight you.

As for hand feeding him or her, it's best to leave cockatiel chicks with their parents until they're two weeks old. It's safest this way because this is when they start to become much less fragile and won't need feeding quite as often. If you're going to be hand feeding an entire clutch, then it's often reccomended that you take them away from their parents when the youngest turns fourteen days old. You can buy the baby bird formula and syringes at your pet store and the people there can help you with knowing exactly how often to feed your chicks.

Good luck!

It is not possible for a mamma cockatiel to overfeed her baby. At times, the crop will look larger than the rest of the body, this is completely normal. You might handfeed too much, but not mamma bird!!!
If you take the male out, the female and baby will starve. Hens stay in their nests with their babies and the daddies eat then regurgitate for mom, who regurgitates for baby. Remove Dad, and you will lose Mom and Baby.

Make sure the parents are getting the proper diet for feeding a baby. They need more than bird seed to raise healthy babies. Make sure they have plenty of clean water.
