It just seems like I know a ton of people with cancer and I want some hard facts about what the statistics show. It is really depressing knowing that you or your family members have a good chance of getting cancer.

Well, the good news is that more people are surviving than they did before . . this gives the illusion that there are 'more' people with cancer. 20 or 30 years ago you did not hear about people with cancer because there was limited treatment and they died.

In 2003 more than 2 million new cancer cases were diagnosed in the united states. Cancer can strike anyone. Typically people in their 50s all though there are exceptions. Pancreas cancer is the worst. 30,700 people in the u.s. were diagnosed with it. ONly 700 survived. thats a 98% mortality rate.

5 out of 10 people have cancer seems kind of high, that translates to 50% of the population have it.
In my very large family, (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, nieces & nephews) there have been 4 deaths and 5 survivors of different types of cancer, including myself.

my mom had cancer and so did my grandpa my mom almost died(thyroid) and grandpa did die(lung)
