I believe they can only if the adult is deemed incompetent by a court. If the person is going to hurt themselves, the laws in each state are different. Try calling the local ER to find out if that is the case. You can also call a mental health facility to find a more specific answer.

the last thing we want to do is commit somebody, remember that is a last resort, a physciatrist told me that once, so you can see what they think of institutions.
i hope all other means are completely exhausted before you take this drastic measure unless the person is truely a danger to themslves or others, see if there is somehow a way they can be integrated into society at least part time.
I wouldn't put my dog in an institution.

Only if they are an immediate harm to themselves or others...and the police have to immediately be called when the occurance happens. Then you child would be put on a 5150 (72 hour hold) for observation. If they see the need for that person to be committed, then they will do it.

Yes, but it takes a court hearing to prove that the child/adult is unable to make that decision for themselves, and possibly a danger to themself or others.

They would have to go to court to prove that they are a danger to themselves or others. They can't just call the hospital to come pick them up.

i think if they are the only family that that adult child has, an they have mental problems, but they must prove that person is unable to live in the real world,or unable to function-on there own.
