Is this a good idea or not. The vet is not staffed 24hrs and she would be alone anyways. I think she would do better at home where I can watch her closely. The vets secretary said today that its not permitted, that they keep her there two nights, the first to get her use to the new environment (and for blood tests) the second to make sure she is okay. The vet has a good reputation, however I think she would do better with me that night. I would leave her there the whole day, just until closing. My pup has never been alone and I want her home with me. What should I do. I would just like to have some opinions. My pup is 8 months old now. Love her so much.
Worried mum..

I got my male neutered and had to leave him there all night. I really hated it. Actually it is a good idea to leave her at the vet if they are staffed 24 hours, but since they are not I can understand your concern.

Maybe you could check at another vet's office to see if they have the same policy.

Good Luck. I hope your sweet little doxie does okay.

I had my Bichonpoo spade when she was 6 months old. I wanted to take her home the same day too. However, the vet said she was still groggy and the best thing for her would be to stay overnight. A nurse spent the night with her. This turned out to be the best thing I could have done. When I picked her up the next day she was completely out of the anesthesia. Her pain had been managed well and she was frisky and happy as ever. I missed her terribly not having her at home but I trusted the vet enough to abide by her opinion. I really think my pup did better having spent the night at the vets.

Yes I would bring her home, The vet clinic I go to all surgeries with some exceptions go home the same day. If nobody is there 24hrs then nobody will be able to help her if she needed it, at least you will be able to watch her. Just make sure you get a list of things to watch out for. When dog was done I dropped her off at 8:00 am surgery was done, about 1hr to 2hrs after she was eating and drinking then around 4:00pm I brought her home with a list of does and don't. Then any questions I called the vets or the 24hr emergency clinic. Hope this helps.

Some vets will not allow a female that has been spayed to come home that night. I have had 3 female dogs and none got to come home with me. By the way, do you have any vets there that spays using laser surgery?? This type of surgery has less bleeding and quicker recovery times. I would think if they kept your dog they would check on her right before they left and if they do not see any problems would probably not come back that night. Remember you have to keep them from jumping for about 7-10 days.

Leave the dog at the vet. I've worked in many animal hospitals and its very important that the dog stay there. Regardless of whether they are staffed 24 hours a day or not if something happens the staff is right there during the day to take care of the situation. They are able to keep an eye on her stitches, bleeding, possible hemorraging, etc.

I know you're worried - and you can go visit her but it is very important that she stays there for those 2 nights.

The best thing to do is to follow the vet's advice. The pup will be sedated the first night and will sleep through the night and will not be worried about where you are. Although the clinic may not be staffed 24 hours, typically members of staff will check on them that evening and first thing in the morning before releasing her to you.

This is the best thign for your dog. You will miss her, but her health should be your first consideration.

I know your vet means well and I hate to go against what they say but I agree with you 100%. There is no way I leave my dog over night and never two days. I take them in the morning and bring them home later that evening. I agree with you about she would be better at home where you can keep an eye on her. You can always call them if you expect anything wrong..But my dogs comes home with me and I stay with them all night. I have never had a problem bringing them home..And the dogs feel better knowing they are home where they are used to. Really I am not going against your vet I am just agreeing with you.. I would be bringing my dog home. I have taken my dogs back the very next morning if that is what they want, but I never leave them over night. I don't want them scared.

If your going to a good vet please trust his or her rules. Its best that the dog stays overnight in a confined space after surgery and I imagine that your pup won't be wanting to do much more than rest up. I understand your worrying over your pup, I worry over my bassets too but its a routine procedure and your doing the right thing for your baby. And I imagine that someone is in your vets office very very early in the mornings to check on everyone and make sure all is okay.

where i work, we send them home the same day. our clinic is not a 24 hour clinic, the vet says that if something happens to your dog during the night, (excessive bleeding, etc) you can call him, whereas if she were at the clinic by herself no one would know until the next day when someone came to work. just explain your concerns about your dog and may be the vet will agree to you taking her home.we do 5-6 spays at day at the clinic and hardly see any problems post surgery. just be sure to keep her quite for 2-3 days, no jumping on furniture, running, etc. as this is a major surgery and she will be fine.

i have had several females spayed and brought them home that afternoon. i put them in a crate and let them sleep for the rest of the day. they are more comfortable at home. i can understand your vet wanting to keep the dog for one night maybe, but 2! thats bull. find another vet to do the procedure. sounds tlike this vet may be good, but also wants your money.
