It'll eventually wear down after a month or so, but you'll have to grow it out to completly rid your hair of the chemicals and the product.

Did the perm turn into an afro? If it did keep washing it and combing it out it should start to settling down.

Every 8 to 10 weeks. Also your hair grows 1/2 inch a month.

depending on how strong the perm it will relax the curls by 2 months, but the only way to actually get rid of it is to cut the hair off because the chemicals have altered the bonds in your hair and they cannot be reconstructed.

In most cases, it needs to grow out. If you trim all of your ends often, it will look better while you are waiting. If your hair is in good condition, you could straighten it--but you can't do this if you've just had the perm (or hair color) recently.
