Occasionally, after starting my vehicle in the morning, there is no engagement when I shift from Park to Drive or Park to Reverse. My van just sits there. After a few minutes, it will finally lurch into drive and everything runs smoothly after that. I'm guessing this is a transmission problem, but does anyone have an idea just what kind? Am I looking at a minor repair or a total overhaul? I'm not hearing any strange noises and my fluid levels are good.

Are you certain you are checking your trans fluid correctly? It should read on the stick how it's to be done. Most will say something to the effect of "Check in Neutral, with engine running, transmission hot". If this isn't done as it's supposed to be you can get a false reading. If it IS correct and your fluid level is ok then you may want to have a transmission shop or dealer look into it.

You don't mention the type of vehicle.
Although the symptoms you give are indicative of a bad front pump.
But some of the GMs and Chryslers are known for having a bad seal between the filter and the valve body.
Replacing the filter ( which will come with a new seal )
will most likely cure this problem.

If it's a Chrysler product warm the engine up with the transmission in neutral. This starts the hydraulic pump in the tranny. Park doesn't start it like GM vehicles.

That'll be your transmission telling you it's about to die. Think clearly -is this vehicle worth a $2000 rebuild? A junk yard trans will just buy you more miles, maybe not many.

Most likely its a shifter linkeage problem which is a cheap problem. It sounds like the linkeage is loose, as long as you dont hear any grinding, gears arent slipping and your fluid doesnt smell like its burnt it should be an easy fix for a tranny shop. oh and there is no such thing as a transmission belt unless you have a CVT transmission which you probably dont

get the transmission fluid and filter changed and buy a bottle of Lucas transmission fix and have them put it in the transmission when they refill with fluid after they are finished doing the fluid change.

Have you checked the oil level in the gearbox, it may just be low, check your hand book to see where the dip stick is located...

Check your fluid first, if it is full then it isnt building enough pressure to shift..... it could be the pressure regulator.
