ex: my friend says judo involves no punching, but grabbing and flipping.

that's a broad question. Every martial art has it's own principles behind it. Every move has it's own set of theories and principles actually. Every instructor, every school, every motion, etc.....

You can't just generalize a question that broad into a few sentences. Just like the guy above said his instructor had a principle of "taking the space" for judo. I've heard one instructor say "let the ground be your fist." Everyone has a little different approach, even to the simplest of things.

Well grabbing and flipping doesnt sound like a principle to me. We learned a little Judo in my class and the principle my instructor was teaching was called, "taking the space".

Choi Kwang Do is based on reflex and preemptive striking that is nonharmful to the martial artist. CKD has no ground fighting. The philosophy behind that being that in a real there are no rules, so do what you gotta do.
