I'd recommend Ubuntu. It's available at http://www.ubuntu.com/

You might also try reading http://consumer.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTI5OCwxLCxoY29uc3VtZXI= to get an idea of what it's like to use Ubuntu - it has some nice screenshots and pros and cons.

SLAX is certainly my favorite. I carry around a USB stick with my own custom SLAX. I think it has the perfect balance between size and speed on one end, and features, ease of use, and look on the other end. I find it much nicer and easier to use than the ultra-stream downed DSL or PuppyLinux. It also has fluxbox as an option though, incase you are running om an older system. It also has the largest and most stable collection of packages to customize your disk/usb with.

BTW, they are on the verge of coming out with a new stable version, 6... with even further improvements over other LiveDistros on it.

Here's a list of other Live Distros (You'll notice a lot of them are actually based on SLAX):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LiveDistros

EDIT - I should point out, many full (harddrive installation) linux Distros installer disks ARE Live CDs themselves... and confusingly advertise themselves as Live disks. However, they are NOT LiveDistros, not meant as full portable desktop versions... but examples and installers. Ubuntu is a great distro if you want to install one on your computer, but you would not want ot use it as a live distro itself.

To burn it, just use any burning software... they come as ISO images. With XP, you can just like drag to a blank CD. To boot it, on Dells you simple hold F12 as the computer loads. Some systems, you just need to put the disk in, and it will autmoatically boot of the CD first... or you may need to edit the BIOS so that it boots of the CD first. The SLAX site has some instructions

i prefer to advise Ubuntu, simply by fact it somewhat is a greater properly-known linux distro so in case you ever have any questions you may purely google it. if you're going to apply one as your important working device, then it is your selection provided that the two are Debian based so they could be comparable in a large form of techniques. They the two do an identical issues in actuality, simply by fact they are the two based off of Debian Linux.

For new users, I recommend UBUNTU (XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

If you like it you can do a dual boot with your current OS. This will give you access to more codecs and thousands of programs created by the open source community.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Try Kubuntu. You can order a free live CD on their web site.

The live CD gives you a desktop Icon to install on your hard drive.

Great distro for Windows users. If your PC is older, try Knoppix or Freespire. Yahoo search for them.
