I think it could easily be summed up in a brief explaination of the October Revolution. The Armies of the Russian Empire were quite loyal to their nation and Czar, and could be arguably both patriotic and nationalistic. The same could be said of their counterparts in the Peoples Revolution. However, I try to think of it in this respect: The rebels were patriots, and the czarists were nationalists.

Extremism is no good. Getting stuck in a ditch is unhealthy. The same could be said of any extremist group. their cause is stuck in a metaphorical and idealogical ditch.

Patriotism is not a short outburst of emotion, but is the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. Adlai Stevenson
Nationalism is often a thin veil over hate and aggression worldwide. Chest beating is not patriotism it is fools pride.
American patriotism is adherence to the constitution. Nationalism is Bush Cheney style rhetoric.

Patriotism- "My country is great"
Nationalism- "My country is greater than your country"

When patriotism is taken too far without thought, it becomes nationalism. Excessive nationalism results in fascism, where the individual is expected only to serve the country, and what the country does is beyond reproach. Look at Italy under Mussolini for a classic example of fascism.

I don't think that patriotism and nationalism mean "Dubyanism".

Extremes (I'm talking about religion, politics, patriotism, nationalism,...) are bad because you may think that you are 100% right and everybody is wrong. You may also hurt people.
