You say "Oh.. we just do. I have to go now." It is so not worth it arguing with random people over who has more money. That's so childish.

I wouldn't get offended but neither would I answer the question. How I would answer depends on the situation... I might just say 'we just do' or less politely 'that's not your concern' or joke about it 'well, with the printer in the basement of course'.

Either way I wouldn't care unless they pressed on after that; I believe anyone should be able to ask any question, about money or relationships or any other personal issue, but only once! If I do not answer and they keep pressing, *then* I get mad!

You are one of the gems in this world who care enough to help your friend.
That said :
You can explain that she has a choice to make she can either be offended or she can politely say "While I apprecaite the concern you seem to have about my personal finances it's really none of your concern" and go on about your conversation. It's truely no one's buisness how your friend handles her personal finaces.

i say.
'my income is none of your business.'
then switch to another topic

nothing like abruptness to make someone realize a faux pas

I don't ask people how they manage their affairs because I really don't care.

I would say: "We get by" and then I would drop the subject.
