It depends on where you live and if it is a chain (Gold's Gym) or locally owned.

Memberships can vary from a few dollars a month ($1.00) to several hundred ($250) depending on what amenities you are interested in (i.e massages, steam room, jacuzzi, swimming pool, climbing wall, aerobics, weights, personal trainers, etc.) The best bet is to look in your local yellow pages and call around.

If you are short on funds but want to get healthy try your local recreation center. Our local recreation center charges $1 a day and has a full weight room with full free weights and machines as well as aerobic, dance, step and Pilate's classes throughout the day. It is convenient for me as I have to drive by it going to and from work and is open from 5 am to 10 pm.

It depends on whether you choose a privat gym or a leisure centre. If you go for a private gym, you have the choice of an off peak membership (from 09.00 - 16.00 hrs in most gyms) and this can be from about £45 per month. In a leisure centre, this can be anything up to £40. A peak membership at a leisure centre will cost you about £55 and to a private gym anything upto a £100 per month. You also have to consider a one-off joining fee and these vary hugely depending on the area you live and the contract you have. be careful though as most private gyms will nail you to a 12 month direct debit payment contract - you'll pay for it even if you don't use it!
