"Holy" is a rendering of the Latin "sanctus," which does indeed mean "set apart," as for "ritual" use. But the word comes from the OE "hal" - "health, happiness, good luck."

In practice, just about every behavior conceivable, and its contradictory, has been considered "holy" by somebody at one time or another. So what's holy? Depends who you ask.

The word "holy" means to be "set apart". As soon as you ask Christ to forgive you of your sins, you are holy.

Ephesians 1:4
He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.
