I have been seeing this guy for about 4 months. I'm a single mom and now working full time and I just don't have time for this relationship. That is the story I intend to use. In truth he never sees my kids, twice in the four months he's met them. And I find him boring and at times thoughtless and insensitive along with being selfish. What is the best way for me to break up with him to avoid him questioning me or trying to make it work? I want a nice clean break.

nothing is ever nice and clean. But avoid the boring, thoughtless and insensitive, and selfish comment.
if he is, simply tell him you don't have time and want to focus on your kids right now.

You need to just say that this relationship is getting in the way with your kids, no matter who he is, you never can question a single mom's care for her kids.

just tell him the truth. it seems like the things you dont like about him are the things he cant change anyway, so there would be no chance for him to change and try to start it up again. or just tell him you hate his guts.

explain this to him and hope for the best

your main concern should be your kids, and it seems he's not interested in them.

so find someone that is
