If you're trying to maintain or build muscle mass, drink a shake with 1 scoop of whey mixed with water or skim milk before the workout, and 1 shake IMMEDIATELY (right after you set the last dumbbell down) after with 1 scoop of whey and 1 scoop of maltodextrin (carbs). The maltodextrin helps shuttle healthy carbs (glycogen) and protein straight into your muscles for rebuilding. Think of it like body lotion. When you put lotion on right out of a shower your skin immediately feels better. If you put lotion on mid-day, your skin doesn't absorb it nearly as good. This is probably the most important protein consumption during the day for a bodybuilder or anyone who is serious about maintaining hard to ear muscle mass.

There is an exceptionally important timing phase within the hour of working out. This is the most critical stage in which you need to consume a balanced ratio of fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Your muscles will soak up these nutrients and put them to use more in this phase than at any other time of eating. Try to consume two scoops of a quality protein powder (you can choose if you want to mix it with water, juice or milk-if you go this route I would recommend skim or 1%). If you're looking to gain weight you need to consume AT LEAST 1 lb. of protein per lb. of body weight, with actually 1.6 times your body weight being ideal. To obtain this, take your shake, wait about 15 mins. to a half hour to let your stomach empty out any fluid and then eat a hight protein meal. As far as taking protein prior to working out, it depends on what you're doing and whether or not you want to believe in the tests done on athletes as to whether or not pre-workout protein is beneficial. If by what you mean working out is running, most runners say protein drinks sometimes upset their stomaches. For bodybuilders this goes the same, just not as much, and some take a pre-workout drink b/c protein powders are loaded with high quality amino acids, the building blocks of protein. There are some great articles by Will Brink on this (do a search and you'll come across his website). Hope this helped!

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish and what your physical demands are. Gaining weight or losing? Is your workout intense weight training, hi-level cardio, or something less demanding. Protein are building blocks for muscle. If you are trying to gain weight a shake before and after is probably sufficient. If you have a hard workout and burn off alot of carbs and fat your body is going to keep looking for a place to get the energy from. Protein is the last source your body will take energy from. So if you don't replensih quickly you will find yourself not gaining any muscle or losing muscle tone and becoming weaker. This is why most marathoners are so slim they burn everything! Hope this helps

Protein should be consumed throughout the day, you should not eat anything 3 hours before the gym because then you would just be burning what you have just eaten!! You wouldn't be targeting the stored fat in the body!

I drink between 6-12oz of protein shake 15 mins after my workout, its the best thing to do for your body!
