Qualify your customer, find out what he wants, whats important to him and tailor your presentation to him.
Telling is not selling.
Listen to what your customer says.
Ask questions.
People will buy from you if they like or feel comfortable with you.
A good deal is only as good as the customer thinks it is.
The customer is on your lot, it's up to you to stay in control of the situation.
The customer can always walk away and sometimes they will.
This is very cynical but a sale is made in every encounter.
Either you sell him a car or he sells you on the reason he's not buying one.
If an objection to the sale arises, isolate the objection, try to overcome it.
A condition is not an objection.
Buyers do not always tell the truth.
It's okay, they are usually nervous or scared and it's only a defense mechanism.
When closing a customer, stay focused.
Both of you want the same thing: he wants to buy, you want to sell. Result: he gets a car, and if you did your job right, you have a lifelong customer resulting in money for yourself.
I can go on forever. I hope this gets you started.
And always smile and make eye contact when meeting a customer for the first time.

I have been a salesman for 7 years at the same dealership, been to numerous sales workshops and this is exactly what they teach you. Meet/greet-Qualify-Confirm-Negotiate-Close. All with a big smile. To be honest you dont need much product knowlege. Most people that come into a dealership already know what they want. Its more about selling yourself. Also the more prospects you have the more cars you sell. You should use spotters - friends or associates who refer people to you, if you sell this particular person a car your spotter gets say $50. Best people for this are bar staff, hairdressers, tradesman you get the drift. Happy selling.

There's an old saying: Dazzle 'em with brilliance, or baffle 'em with BULL SH**

To be a TOP salesman, you have to be willing to LIE, Cheat little old ladies or anyone not knowledgeable about cars and finances,
put making money ahead of integrity, and be PROUD of how badly you stuck it to some poor S.O.B.

If you can do this and sleep well at night, you will soon be a "top" salesman.

Will your mother be proud of you? only if she's rotten too.

Know your product, know the stupid details that people will try to catch you on, KNOW THE MOTOR INFO, know what the buttons in the car does, and don't bullshit people.
Honesty still has a place in the world, even for the car salesman.

First you have to have the right personality for it. You have to know how to sell, you have to know your product well, and you have to know your employer's (dealership's) sales practices well.

If you have all this, you have what it takes.

Go sell, and good luck!!
