Just because there's a old BT socket in your flat does not mean that it is connected to the exchange. It could have been disconnected anywhere between your flat and the main exchange. It will have no number if it has been cut-off (disconnected). The only way to get a number for the line is to have it reconnected, and for that you will be charge by BT or whoever you want to subscribe to.

One simple way is to dial your mobile phone which would display the number of the calling party (in this case, your own landline number). or if you have a friend who has a phone caller id, give him a ring. :-)
However, if the line has been disconnected and even BT doesnt have any records available, you can probably ask your landlord for a copy of the bills sent to him by your telephone line provider and identify which number is billed to your unit.

Here are some ways for you:
Firstly if service is working call say your mobile and this will display the number ( if it comes up withheld then dial 1470 and then your mobile number and this will release this number for you)
Secondly, dial 17070 and a recording will give you the number ( sames as above if withheld dial 1470 17070 and this will work!!)
Hope helps!

call the phone company and give them your address, they should be able to tell you,
or have your landlord contact the previous tenant...usually landlords have to send a refund check, so they will have a forwarding address
if you have a phone bill the number will be on that

you need to get connected then - chose who you want & they'll give you a number, the people who had the flat before you might have taken the number with them x

if its disconnected then there is no number.
it might have dialtone, whch the phone company basically makes it so if you pickup the phone to dial it calls them to setup and account.
it also allows you still able to make 911 calls (at least how it works in North America)

Call the phone company and give them your address. If it gets turned back on, just call any phone with caller ID.

If BT doesn't know it, and you are disconnected, I think you are out of luck.
