DO NOT TAKE DIET PILLS! They are dangerous!!

Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills (Leptopril -does not contain ephedra) on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.

My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.

They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.

I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.

Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)

The quickest way is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.

Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.

In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)

Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.

Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)

Go exercise for at least an hour a day, incorporating weight training. Weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition. Also do a few yoga and pilates exercises to help tone those hard to reach and stubborn areas.

A proper diet is the best way to lose weight naturally and keep it off. You have to eat a varied adequate and balanced diet. Your body needs all kinds of food to function properly including fat in smaller quantities though. Your body needs the nutrients and vitamins in fruits and vegetables the most, that is what you should eat the most of (at least 5 servings a day). You also need protein, and a little fat. Reduce your intake of sweets, fried food and foods that contain a lot of fat. Don't drink too many alcoholic beverages or soft drinks (they have a lot of calories). Don't go to sleep right after you eat. And finally exercise at least 3 to 4 days a week for about 45 minutes.Good luck. You can also get more information about nutrition from this site:

Please do not use diet pills. Do South Beach for a few weeks, or any low carb diet plan. I lost 10 pounds per week doing the Suzanne Somers diet plan which was eating Grape Nuts in the morning for breakfast, a salad with meat on it for lunch (no carbs at all) and a very low carb dinner like a hamburger patty, veggies with a red pasta sauce. All my carb consumption was done early on so it could be burned off. Most of all NO eating past 7 pm. Just drink water or iced tea. No caffiene at all and NO sugar. It works for everyone I know.

Replace every sugary drink with water and walk instead of dirving/taking a bus as much as you are able to. Maybe even invest in the PS2 game Dance Dance Revolution SuperNova. Buying a game and pad bundle is best ($60 at many retail stores such as Best Buy). The game has a Workout Mode that counts the amount of calories you burned by dancing. You can even set the workout time or workout calorie burn goal!

Good luck!

SEE A DIETITIAN!. Seriously. I found out the hard way that everything they have always said about bad eating habits is true! A dietitian can help you develop a healthy eating plan that gives you proper nutrition. That alone will help you lose weight. At the same time I would suggest getting a pedometer and keeping track of your "steps" a day. Studies have shown that 10000 steps a day makes you much less prone to chronic disease. You may find it takes very little conscious effort to get your steps up in the optimum range. I don't know how you determined that you need to lose 20-30 pounds but if you are trying to achieve a body fat percentage realize that the more fit you are, the more you can weigh and have that optimum percent body fat.

Last August 1 I weighed 458 pounds. Through mostly just diet (I've only had one 10K step day since I started wearing the pedometer) I've lost 43 pounds. Depending on how busy work is I usually walk between 4K and 6k steps at work. It takes less that an hour's walk to get my numbers up in the 8-9K steps range.

Go for it! It's not as hard as it sounds. People ask me what "diet" I'm on (Atkins, South Beach, low carb, etc.)? My dietitian cringes when she hears me say diet but I say I'm on a mind-your-manners (no binging) and think about what you eat diet. (The dietitian would rather I say I'm just making healthy lifestyle decisions.)

She bases my "needs" on a 250 pound man because none of the computer programs could handle it if we said what I really weigh (and you couldn't eat enough healthy food to satisfy those demands anyways.) I try to not have more than 83g fat a day (and no more than 23 of those g saturated fat.) I try to get 45-60g fiber daily (remember I weigh 415), at least three servings of dairy, and lots of vegetables and fruits and such. Because of my high blood pressure I try to limit my sodium content to 2400mg daily. I chose low-fat or heart healthy proteins. Carb sources need to have at least 3g fiber per serving. I try to limit my sugars. I like Splenda and use it often as a substitute. If you don't like sugar substitutes buy plain food and add your own sugar. (My dietitian pointed out that sugar frosted mini-wheats have 12g sugar per serving - she said to get the plain mini-wheats and add my own sugar because 12g sugar was like 4 tbsp sugar and there was no way I would put that much sugar on myself.)

It really is about making healthy choices. Limit soda and candy and coffees with a lot of sugar added in. Drink more plain water. Get a little more exercise. Make healthier decisions on foods you eat.

Good luck!

the best way is this.

chew and eat your food as slow as possible. trust me one time i got full off of a cookie because i ate it so slowly.

run everyday, don't push your self to hard because if you go to far you get in a muscle building zone, when you wantto be losing weight.
