My husband has 3 felonies for drug possession and was a heroin addict for 4 years. He sought treatment and help and has been off heroin for 5 years now. I met him 9 months ago and we just got married 2 weeks ago. I love him very much and I think it took courage to change. Has anyone here on yahoo answers been a drug addict and turned their life around?

I've never been an addict, but I have had experience with some. It is possible for "some" people to change. I've seen it happen. However, when a person gives up that type of lifestyle, they need a strong, positive influence to keep them from backsliding. My best advice to you is to keep your man involved and busy. Also reassure him of your love and support. Good luck.

Haven't "been there done that" here myself BUT I know of numerous cases of people doing the 180 !!! Have a second cousin who -- to all who have known him-- after many years of absolute insanity with his approach to everything totally inside out and backwards -- finally had an apiphany of some sort and has literally slapped everyone that's ever known him in the floor with the way he has made unbellievable progress in his life since--- you would not believe it unless you had seen it for yourself (this is not a fluke or one of those "for the moment things either--- he's been squared out now for about seven years)

Granted there are those who "make the change" for a time-- and the reason so few people give someone like this any credit at all on the subject is the vast numbers who will have these one or two year "changes" then-- back down they go !!!
And, it definately can be said that anyone who has been there is NEVER TRULY OVER IT and CAN be a "relapse case" at any time in the future---- at some point the there has to be some ease up by the people around someone like this on the acceptance thing ---- The individual themselves though can never ever truly "relax" about it because the moment they do -- the possibility is there that they are going to have "that moment " in time that they are convinced that they can "taste" a touch of their past "just for old time's sake" and ---- there they go !!!!!!

Yes I used to do any drug I could get my hands on and it escelated into needle use. I was arrested as well and so sick of living that lifestyle. I am now drug free (except I smoke weed) and I go to a University and have even made the president's list with a 4.0 GPA!!! I work for an advertising company and everyday it gets easier to move on. Believe me when I tell you if your man has gone through all of the crap in that lifestyle and has been clean, he has done a tremendous amount of work on himself. If you work that hard to change that lifestyle (some people do not ever get out or even want to get out) then you don't ever want to go back because it is a living h*ll. I think you are with a good man who recognizes his faults and did everything in his power to make it right.

I think that it is possible for people in your husbands situation to change but you have to be aware that relapse just may very well happen. If he himself stopped using because he wanted to - not because he was arrested or because someone forced him to change - the chance he will be successful is much greater. So, I would say that his reason for getting clean is very important - that, along with his involvement with his treatment program - meetings, church, support groups, etc.
I wish you the best of luck - stay strong and stay smart. If he does slip up you will have to keep true to yourself to avoid a disaster.

I was once addicted to crank.not crack nor heroin.Crank is more like an acid trip with the stay awake for days cocaine feeling, but yes I was there once.I almost lost my daughters when a friend of mine thought someone in her son's school was going to poison him,so we rushed into the school and she flip out on the principle and before you knew it I was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car.I had been awake for like 5 days and must of look like real hell, when the woman at the police station asked if I thought I was stable enough to have my children back, it was like a cold slap of reality and my heart just broke, just the thought of losing them was too much.It was then that I turned my life over to Christ and found a way to cope with all the issues I had, that put me in that position to begin with, but with determination and the will to be strong I made it.I moved away and started a better beginning with my girls and I must say they are pretty smart girls with lots to offer.Thank God!!!

Anyone can change. For some, the change process will be much harder as old patterns, old addictions can be difficult to overcome. But with enough will power, support from loved ones, anyone can change.

That is why so many millions of dollars are spent on advertising. They are expecting that you will "change" and buy their product.

I was addicted to cocaine and I disconnected myself from it, by myself and I'm so much happier because of it. I know now that I would lose everything if I went back to it.. if you have any doubt in him, let him know that if you ever have reason to suspect drug use, that you will do what you deem necessary
