Mormons believe in the speaking of tongues, it's in their articles of faith... but you'll never see one do it.

When we speak in tongues the Holy Spirit creates the language, we say it, and it goes to God, bypassing our peanut brain with its conceptual limitations.
I think only christians and Jews (in the Old Testament that is) know of the Holy Spirit, so don't know how non-christians would speak in tongues genuinely.
What about dervishes in Islam, don't they do some strange things (probably whacked)? If there was any tongue-speaking it would be in more broad-minded islamic groups like the Sufis. Muslims don't believe in the Holy Spirit though as we all know.

I was listening to a Pastor called Dave Roberson a month or two ago on divers tongues. He has actually spoken in other languages he didn't know himself at times - Spanish, French etc, as the Holy Spirit willed, to help particular people. Praying in tongues for edification is meant for all christians.

I believe that Mormons speak in more tongues than most. Most Americans at least. It has to do with the missionary program and learning foreign languages.

My brother speaks English, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish. I also taught him the German pronouns once at a movie. I alas can only speak English and German, but I can count to ten on one hand in two different ways!

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I can say that I believe that the gift of tongues is two-fold. First of all, people may be able to miraculously speak another language other than their own. Another common interpretation is that our Heavenly Father will aid those who desire and do seek earnestly to obtain competence in another language.

To answer your question, I have never seen a member of the Church speak with the first definition of the gift of tongues. Despite this, the second definition is widespread throughout the Church. Many prospective missionaries are blessed with the gift of tongues in that God helps them to learn their mission language.

I hope that this answers your question.
