I may be simplifying a bit, but alot of the very religious people I have met don't have that much of a sense of humour, especially about themselves. take them selves a bit serious..you know?

what I was wondering, If you totally reject this, or know what I mean?

I follow God and look at the natural world it created and everywhere you look you see comedy and humor. Our world is filled with diversity and contrast and this is a mirror of God and should likewise be our mirror.

It seems to be a christian/muslim thing. Certainly the jews have a long tradition of comedy. Christians, especially fundamentalists, seem to have a very serious outlook on religion. They don't seem to be willing to take a joke.

Take South Park. Here is a show that actually depicts Jesus and god and satan as real. It certainly pokes fun at religion but its morality (aside from the sex and language) is actually very good (albeit in a liberal protestant way). It even pointed out that if the world turned Atheist we'd still find a way to have religious wars. Unfortunately, too many christians can't seem to get beyond the sex and language.

Frankly I think they need to lighten up if they're ever going to enlighten up.

Maybe it's not that we don't have a sense of humor...Maybe you're just not funny. I like a good joke as much as the next person, but religion isn't funny. Think of it like this: If you were going in for a very serious surgery and the doctor said jokingly, "I got on the last guys nerves, so I cut his spinal cord." Not the time or place to be funny...Same thing with religion.

A sense of humor is a personality trait. Not a religious preference. However I do understand where u are coming from. Some people mistake piety as a TRUE walk with God..........how stupid. If we are made in Gods image and he gave us the ability to laugh........THEN LAUGH IT UP. More than likely Jesus and the disciples had a blast of a time.......c'mon, who doesnt have fun kickin it with the fellas. And for those who may get offended by that, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX cuz ur bible has NOTHING in it refuting that statement!!!

When writing it is hard to see if you are kidding or not. Something like 80 percent of communication is non verbal so it is very hard to tell on here if someone is being serious or not! Also faith is a serious thing to some people you are talking about they belief system that affects everything that they do! Try telling them it is a joke don't assume anything especially if you are writing it!

I agree. And that's because a lot of Christians have the mindset that they must be "a good example" and cannot or won't admit their faults, shortcomings, sins lest it bring shame on Christianity. Also they fear others, especially non believers, are looking and judging their every move, so it's hard to relax and show their weaknesses when the honor of Christ is at stake.
This situation is sad indeed.

My Wife and I are Jehovah's Witnesses and we have a great sense of humor. Laughing is good for your health. We don't get upset when we hear jokes about our religion because they are making Jehovah's name known :O)
Laughing produces more red blood cells. As long as the joke is clean without foul language we don't mind.
To be able to laugh is a gift from Jehovah God :O)

I like jokes.

One day, the Pope, Billy Graham, and President Benson (previous president of the Mormon Church) were out fishing on a lake. The Pope says, "Oh dear! I forgot the can of worms." So he climbs out of the boat and walks on the water to the pier, gets the can of worms, walks on the water back to the boat and gets in the boat. President Benson says, "I forgot the fishing tackle." So he gets out of the boat, walks on the water to the pier, gets the tackle, and walks back. Billy Graham, not to be outdone, says, "I forgot the pop." So he gets out of the boat and promptly sinks into the water. The Pope turns to President Benson and says, "Should we show him where the rocks are?" And President Benson says, "What rocks?"

Yeah I understand what you're saying. The few very religious people I know are serious to the extent that you feel like you have to walk on eggshells when you're around them...

Well, ya know what, I agree. I think we do take ourselves way too seriously. I think God is the author of humor and sometimes we must crack him up with our prim and proper stuff when a situation obviously calls for laughter.
