sit ups work your lower abs, when you put your head up as high as you can ( or up to your knees) and crunches work your upper abs. the main difference is that you have to go higher for a sit-up and in a crunch your not moving that much.

Basically they are the same thing only With sit ups your are raising higher, but also wasting energy and time.
With a crunch you only raising up so that you shoulders are off the floor and this is sufficient and better for you as you are getting a full workout of the abs with less effort.

while situps target ur entire abdomniale region as well as strains ur back, crunches tend to isolate that six pack ur looking for and are much better

crunchs are just bringing your self high enough to touch your fingers to your knees while your feet are elevated and curl ups bring your head up to your knees.
