LOL, with my three year old I'm constantly saying "Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?" Just when did I become my mother?

no, if they did then it would be a perfect world. all you can do is explain things over and over again, and eventually they'll get tired of listening to you

How old is your child?

Have you tried getting down on his level, saying his name and touching his shoulder to get eye contact before you give a direction?

Mine does because he knows he'll have a sore behind if he "refuses" to do what I tell him.

why do they have a choice? you are the parent -act like it. if they don't perform their chores, have consequences and keep them.
pick your fights.
