At first I thought this a trick question because I bought a table for my son's room when he was age seven; but it weighed in at only 40-pounds. Boom-boom.
Okay, what kind of table? Some come fixed, re: Valley tables, Dynamo's, and a few others. Those are the easiest to pack around on their side. Well, not easy; you'll need help. Just be sure to lay a blanket, cardboard or something on the floor of your van. It not only protects from scrathing but it will slide in and out a lot easier.

Transporting or storing a slate vertically is the ONLY way to handle it. Any slate will warp in time if not kept vertical.

sure it's fine to put it on it's side. you will however have to probably have the slate re-set when you set it back upright. we transported one from CA to AZ and when we set it back up, the slate was uneven and we had to have a prof come out and balance it or something so the slate was perfectly even again.
