First, is it JUST an ATM card of is it a debit card?
Next, what are you trying to use it for?
If it has a Visa, of MasterCard logo, you have a debit card. Debit cards can be used exactly like credit cards except your purchases are deducted directly form your checking account. If you are trying to get cash from an ATM, insert the card into the slot. There is usually a diagram the show which direction to insert it. Every ATM I've ever seen has on screen instructions that are very complete.

Make sure that when you choose which ATM to use, it is one that your bank sponsors. This is called being "in the network" for that ATM. If you are using a machine that is in the network, your bank won't charge you a "foreign ATM" or "out-of-network" ATM fee.

If you use an ATM that is out-of-network, you will get a fee from YOUR bank, and some machines will charge you a second fee for the out-of-network ATM's bank.

Be careful asking for a mini-balance report from the ATM. Many banks now charge an extra fee you to get this report on a separate slip from your ATM.

I do believe now that you can use a good ole regular ATM card without the Visa/Mastercard logo at the grocery store now. The stores accept a ton of different types of cards now. But the basics are still the same...put card in or through, put in amount and PIN.
