Between 230 and 300 million individuals internationally have knowledge of the French language.

- 113 million Francophones who speak French as a native or adopted language fluently and use it on a regular basis.

- 61 million "occasional" Francophones who live in a francophone country but do not speak French regularly, due to limited knowledge.

- 100-110 million students of all ages who do not live in a

There is a higher number of people in the world who speak Chinese.

More countries speak Spanish (have it as their official language).

And English is considered the most "common" or "universal" language.

Depending on your point of view, it's either Mandarin or English.

More people speak Mandarin as their native language.

Considering how common English is as a second language, more people can speak English (to some extent anyway) than any other single language.

By their first language it would be Chinese. If you include second languages though it is probably English. Although on a day to day basis it is probably still Chinese mandarin.
