It is a DVD player that takes the dvd signal from a normal (480p) - not HD or blue ray DVD and converts it to 720p or 1080i for display on an HDTV. You must use at least component video cables, and on some units you have to use DVI or HDMI in order for the upconversion to display on an HDTV.

Does this mean better picture? I don't think so.. I have an upconvert DVD player and I don't see any difference between upconvert or not.

A DVD player that can convert a native 480i signal, which is the standard for normal TV's to a higher resolution signal (such as 780p or 1280i) for display on HDTV's.
