Our daughter is 13 months and drinks whole milk. We plan on bringing milk with us (which is fine). But we need to keep it cold. Are we allowed to bring an icepack through security? If not, how is the milk supposed to stay cold?
I've looked in so many places and can't seem to find the answer to this.

Advise the airline of your daughter's dietary requirements, yes that is what they are. The airline will then arrange for fresh whole milk to be on that flight and keep it refrigerated. If security is properly paranoid then they will find a way to consider milk, icepack and even bottles and nipples a safety issue.

No you cannot bring ice thru security. When it melts its a liquid so they say no. The easiest way around this is to freeze one bottle of milk and put it in the bag with the others.

You can't have ice, but you can have baby formula, so freeze one and use it as an ice pack. Or just consider getting milk at the airport. Any airport with a Starbuck would be able to sell you whole milk. They always have it.

You can keep the milk cold by using a thermos or other insulated container. A good quality thermos will keep beverages cold for several hours. Look for one that is like a coffee crafe - a glass vessle on the inside, with a vacuum sealed void between the inner vessle and outter shell. To keep the milk colder longer, fill the thermos with ice water for 15 minutes or so before you fill it with milk.

Once on the plane you can ask the flight attendant for some ice. You are not allowed to bring ice packs or gel packs through security unless you are a traveler with a disablitity who need to keep *medication* cold.

Here's a link to the section of the TSA's website about traveling with children. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

Ice is okay to bring on the plane, also you may request ice from a flight attendant. The only restrictions on ice is Dry ice (4.4 lbs per person in cabin permitted). Most Airplanes dont have refridgerators but definately carry enough ice to serve passengers cold beverage. Bring a mini cooler or lunch box that will hold ice. Even if TSA makes you get rid of the ice at the security check point you may request ice from the airline by asking the gate agent.
