Since Centreville is in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. is the closest large city to there, but nearby cities or towns could also be Vienna, Reston, Chantilly, Herndon, etc. Centreville is about 30 minutes from D.C. The Metro is a "subway," if you will, and it starts in Vienna and goes straight through D.C. and into parts of Maryland. There are also Metro buses that will bring you to the Metro station in Vienna, and there are several stops spread around Centreville marked with red, white, and blue signs.

Virginia has 95 counties and 39 independent cities. An independent city in Virginia behaves like a county in that it has its own courthouse. Fairfax City, VA is both the county seat for Fairfax County, VA and an independent city. Both Manassas and Manassas Park, VA are located in Prince William County and are further away from Centreville than Fairfax City.
The closest independent city to Centreville is likely to be Fairfax City, VA. Metro buses serve downtown Fairfax and local Fairfax Connector buses likely serve places between Centreville and Fairfax City.

Centreville is part of Fairfax County. Places close to Centreville are Chantilly, Manassas, Reston and Herndon.
As for transportation there are metro buses but they do not run often like in major cities. You'd probably have to transfer a couple of times to get to your final destination if you're going farther than down the street.

Manassas Park and Manassas are the closest cities to Centerville, Fairfax is the closest town.
The state of Virginia has very few cities. Most localities are towns, not cities.
