Doing peanut butter as our 1800's invention project for block. Any ideas?

Peanut trees were planted on southern farms and plantations during the 1800's. It provided essential nutrients to the soil, which was being drained by traditinal crops. Peanut trees do not require the same nutrient rich soil as other crops. Peanut butter was created as a use for the new, huge supply of peanuts.

I would guess for the same reason apple butter is made... It can be put in jars and preserved longer than the fruit.

I don't know that is was neecssarily as "need" as much as it was a "discovery". Sometime's discoveries facilitate a need for the new product.
